Capital: Nashville
Population: About 6.5 million people live inTennessee.
Geography: Tennessee has a lot of neighbors. TheVolunteer State is bordered by Kentucky and Virginia to the north,North Carolina to the east, Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi to thesouth, and Arkansas and Missouri to the west. The Great SmokyMountains, a part of the Appalachian Mountains, form the state’seastern landscape while the Mississippi River flows along thestate’s western border.
Higher Education: Vanderbilt University, or Vandy forshort, is the state’s most prestigious institution. Named afterbenefactor and shipping magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt, the privateschool maintains four undergraduate and six graduate andprofessional schools with its highest rankings in education, law,medicine and business. The Volunteer State manages two publicuniversity systems: the University of Tennessee and Tennessee StateUniversity, the only state-funded historically black university inTennessee.

Culinary Specialties: There’s one dish in Tennessee:barbecue. Cooked low and slow, it’s all about pork ribs and spicerubs. Barbecue is so popular in Tennessee, the state has the honorof hosting the Jack Daniel’s World Championship InvitationalBarbecue every year. Of course there are other things to eat inTennessee besides barbecue, like crumbly biscuits and butterycornbread, country ham and blackened catfish. And don’t forget towash it all down with Mountain Dew, a soft drink created inTennessee.
International connection: Nashville has a sister-cityrelationship with Belfast in Northern Ireland and Caen in theNormandy region of France.
