龍（dragon）是一種傳說中的生物（legendary creature），有蛇的（serpentine）或爬行動物的（reptilian）特點（trait），存在于很多文化（culture）的神話（myth/mythology）中。
龍主要有兩種，一種是東方龍（oriental/eastern dragon），來自中國龍（Chinese dragon/loong）【見上圖】；另一種是歐洲民間傳說（folk tradition/folklore）中的歐洲龍（European dragon），與中國龍沒有淵源關系。Dragon一詞來自希臘語（Greek），含義是蟒蛇（python）。

通常，歐洲龍的身體像巨型蜥蜴（lizard）或蛇（snake），口里能噴火（emit fire from mouth），或者呼吸并噴吐毒藥（poison）或冰（ice）。有長在背上（back）的蝙蝠式（bat-type）翅膀（wing）。頭上有角（horned）。身體有羽毛（feathered）或有鱗片（scaled）?？梢詻]有腿，也可以有兩個、四個或者更多腿。有的有冠（crest）、鬃（mane）和奇異的色彩（exotic coloration）。沒有前腿（front leg）的叫wyvern【這個詞可能和worm同源】。現(xiàn)代歐洲龍長得像恐龍（dinosaur）。形象上，似乎東西方的龍有統(tǒng)一的傾向。
在西方傳說中，龍是邪惡的（evil），只是在現(xiàn)代才出現(xiàn)例外。通常與好斗（agreesive）、好戰(zhàn)（warlike）聯(lián)系在一起?，F(xiàn)代的歐洲龍往往很聰明（intelligent），能講話（talk），會魔法（magic）。龍血（blood）有神奇的特點（magical property）。龍一般會保護一個洞穴（cavern）或城堡（castle），里面有黃金（gold）與財寶（treasure），并通常有一個英雄（hero）想殺（slay）它。
西方的龍會出現(xiàn)在紋章（heraldry）中，有不同的姿態(tài)（attitude）【就是position的意思】。朝向（face）觀看者（viewer）左側的叫to dexter；朝向右側的叫to sinister/contourne；面對觀看者的叫affronte；頭轉向觀看者的叫guardant；向后看的叫regardant。描述野獸（beast）姿態(tài)的詞匯主要有：后腳站立的（rampant）；向前直走（passant）；坐姿（sejant/sejeant）；下降的（cadent）；抬頭俯臥（couchant）；奔跑的（courant）；睡覺的（dormant）；跳躍的（salient）；四足著地站立（statant）。

中國龍一般被描述為長的（long）、有鱗的（scaled）、蛇形的（snake-like）生物，有四條腿，每條腿上有五個爪子（claw）。在中國民間傳說和藝術（art）中，龍是吉祥力量（auspicious power）的強烈象征（potent symbol）。龍王（Dragon King）與天氣（weather）及雨水（rain/water）有關。與之相對的生物是鳳凰（fenghuang/phoenix）。

西方有時用龍作為中國的國徽（national emblem），有時也是中國文化的象征。歷史上，龍是中國帝王（emperor）的象征?；饰唬╥mperial throne）叫龍椅（dragon throne）。龍爪的數(shù)量表示等級。清朝在國旗（national flag）上使用過龍。中國人喜歡用“龍的傳人（Descendants of the Dragon）”來表明民族身份（ethnic identity）【蒙古人（Mongol）則用狼（wolf）】。
其它與中國龍有關的文化現(xiàn)象還有：中國歷法（Chinese calendar）的龍年（dragon year）；四瑞獸（celestial guardian）之一的青龍（azure dragon）；龍舟（dragonboat racing）；舞龍（dragon dancing）等。
日本、韓國、朝鮮等也有與中國龍有淵源的龍，但腳趾數(shù)量等方面有區(qū)別【據(jù)說日本四個、韓國與朝鮮三個】。
