鄉(xiāng)下女孩(6張)年輕的女孩Brett Eisenberg是一名兢兢業(yè)業(yè)的副編輯，抱著厚厚一疊書稿一邊用鉛筆涂涂改改一邊穿梭于繁忙的街頭，她有著一個美好的家庭，家人們都寵愛著她，這讓她心思單純卻顯得猶豫不定，她還有一個比她更不成熟的男友Jed，Jed拋下她一個人獨(dú)自去了歐洲“尋找自我”。一天Brett在參加一名作者的簽名售書現(xiàn)場時結(jié)識了編輯界的奇跡――Archie Knox。Archie曾是Brett姑姑的男友，離了兩次婚，曾有著成打的女朋友，作為一個父親，他是失敗的，但作為一個男人，他是成功且有魅力的。Archie看上了Brett的率真與驚人的記憶力，于是向Brett進(jìn)行了追求，一面是Jed的不成熟，一面是Archie的權(quán)勢與愛護(hù)，Brett最終成了Archie的女友，并與Archie同居。
在這期間，Brett換了上司，是個高傲的美女，她對Brett百般刁難，因?yàn)樗苍茿rchie的女友；Archie與女友的關(guān)系愈來愈糟，他開始與Brett爭吵并又開始酗酒；Brett得知她的父親患了癌癥，不久即將離開人世……一連串的打擊使Brett不知該如何是好，她自暴自棄，卻被上司趕去與一名著名作家簽寫合同，在事情快要變得一塌糊涂時，Archie匆匆趕來救援。
Archie與Brett重歸于好，“好像回到了舊時”，Archie去見了Brett的父母，Brett的弟弟問她：“難道你找不到同齡人做伴么？”Brett無言以對。Archie離開不久后，便因急性胰腺炎進(jìn)了醫(yī)院，Brett匆匆趕去看望，隨后她的父親便去世了。
經(jīng)歷了這些以后，Brett從一名女孩成長為一名女人了。所以，面對Archie的求婚，她很平靜地拒絕，很平靜地離開。此后，她丟棄了使她猶豫不定的鉛筆，水藍(lán)色的鋼筆果斷地修改著一個個句子；她所編輯的小說，被擺在了書店櫥窗最顯眼的位置；她將長發(fā)盤起，穿起了那條很潮的褲子，自信滿滿地去參加雞尾酒會。她成長了。
這是一部電影，關(guān)于一個女孩子的成長。
電影中的插曲都非常動聽。前半部分，是輕松愉快的調(diào)調(diào)，充滿著愛與信任，屬于典型的美國風(fēng)格；后半部分，則是憂傷但明亮的小曲，哀而不傷，讓人看得到希望的曙光，如speedingCars、Cold Hearts等；而到了片尾曲，則有回到了開始的曼哈頓愉快的調(diào)子。電影的對白更是值得人慢慢品味，沒有些文學(xué)知識的人大約是沒辦法體會那種幽默的，真是非常非常的遺憾，而那些關(guān)于成長，關(guān)于愛的對白，更是堪稱經(jīng)典。這部電影，不但關(guān)于愛情，更與親情息息相關(guān)，的確，愛情不會是我們生命的全部，我們還有同樣可貴的家人，我們還有自己。
