In this poem the poet expresseda keen awareness of the loveliness and transience ofnature. He not only meditated onmortality but also celebrated nature. Itimplies that life and death are inevitable law of nature.
"The Wild Honey Suckle" is Philip Freneau’s most widely readnatural lyric with the theme oftransience. 2) Life
He was born in New York.
At 16, he entered Princeton University.
While still an undergraduate, he wrote in collaboration with oneof his friends (H.H.Brackenridge) a poem entitled “The Rising Gloryof America”.
Later he attended the War of Independence, and he was captured byBritish army in 1780. After being released, he published “TheBritish Prison Ship” in 1871. In the same year, he published “Tothe Memory of the Brave Americans”.
After war, he supported Jefferson, and contributed greatly toAmerican government.
But after 50 years old, he lived in poverty. And at last he diedin a blizzard.

Almost alone of his generation, he managed to peer through thepervasive
atmosphere of imitativeness, to see life around directly, toappreciate the natural scenes on the new continent and the nativeIndian civilization. Some of his most famous works, with theirlyric quality, sensuous images and their fresh perception of natureand “noble savagery” are directlyAmerican.

弗瑞諾的詩(shī)歌精神境界較高,想像豐富,感情充沛,雖然也涉及死亡、自然、人生、變遷等當(dāng)年感主題,但卻總是以人民和國(guó)家的命運(yùn),歷史或者當(dāng)時(shí)的重大事件為主題,因此富有戰(zhàn)斗性。他也是美國(guó)文學(xué)史上第一個(gè)把詩(shī)歌當(dāng)作爭(zhēng)取民族解放的斗爭(zhēng)武器的詩(shī)人。在詩(shī)歌體裁上,他深受英國(guó)18世紀(jì)亞歷山大·蒲伯(AlexanderPope)的影響,多運(yùn)用英雄雙行體(heroiccouplet)的形式,也即,他匠心獨(dú)運(yùn)地把傳統(tǒng)英詩(shī)的格律運(yùn)用到謳歌北美大陸特有的土著居民和花卉鳥(niǎo)獸的詩(shī)歌當(dāng)中,使他的詩(shī)歌創(chuàng)作充滿(mǎn)濃郁的美洲泥土的芬芳。這就為美國(guó)鄉(xiāng)土詩(shī)歌的發(fā)展打下了堅(jiān)實(shí)的基礎(chǔ)。他的詩(shī)歌既富于浪漫主義色彩,又充滿(mǎn)大自然的清新畫(huà)面,而且還不乏譏誚和幽默感以及對(duì)大自然的敏銳感受力和氤氳于他詩(shī)歌中的曼妙的音樂(lè)感。后期,弗瑞諾則突破了這一局限,運(yùn)用美國(guó)民間語(yǔ)言,采用多種詩(shī)體,試圖在他的詩(shī)中自由地表達(dá)內(nèi)心之所思、所感、所想。主要作品
