劉欣:江蘇鎮(zhèn)江人。1993年考取南京大學(xué)外國(guó)語(yǔ)學(xué)院英語(yǔ)系。1996年3月代表南大參加首屆“21世紀(jì)杯”全國(guó)大學(xué)生英語(yǔ)演講比賽,獲得冠軍;1996年5月代表中國(guó)大學(xué)生首次參加在倫敦舉辦的世界英語(yǔ)演講比賽,獲得冠軍。
劉欣的演講——The Mirror andI
I like to look into the mirror. Iremember when I was a little girl, I often stood on my toes, tryingto find my face in the mirror of the dressing table which wasnearly as high as I was. Now I still like to look into the mirror.Only now, the dressing table is to low for me. As I bend down, Isee the face of a young woman, growing with maturity, confident inher future and fascinatedwith her own reflection.
The fact that I like to look intothe mirror has to do with my granny with whom I spent most mychildhood. I remember clearly that one night I heard hermurmuring,” Women can't be seen. Women can't be seen." I was veryconfused as to look into the mirror the next morning to check if Icould indeed see myself. Only now as a young woman myself, can Iunderstand that it was not physical visibility that granny had onher mind.
Granny spent all her life takingcare of the family, day in and day out. She cooked for her husbandand 10 children. But whenever guests came, she and other femalefamily members had to eat by the stove in the small kitchen. Atfamily discussions, she was never asked for her opinion. Aftergrandpa passed away, she had to listen to my uncle, her eldest son,who became master of the house. Though years of toil, she fulfilledher duty as daughter, wife, and mother; yet as a person, sheremained little noticed. Even though she could see herself in themirror of the dressing table, she was never visible in the mirrorof society.
I had been living a differentlife. At home, I made decisions together with the rest of thefamily. In school, I often take charge of various activities thesame as other boys and girls. Not only that, I can see somethinggranny could not have dreamed of--making decisions for my ownfuture. My life has been a series of decisions. I could choose fromseveral universities as I came out of high school. At universitycould choose from a range of subjects from English literature tobusiness law. And now upon graduation, I am again faceddecisions--to further my study or go to work; to stay in China orgo abroad; to get married right away or to remain single for a bitlonger. It does not matter whether or not I will become famous orrich, but I will treasure the chance to demonstrate my potentialand to help other women demonstrate theirs as full members ofsociety ,full visible in the mirror in the history. I will treasureit because the abundance of choice that I enjoy came only afterdecades of effects made by my granny, my mum, and millions of otherChinese women.
However the choices to be made byme and others of my generation are a great challenge. Themisconception of men are superior to women is still dominating manypeople's minds. Will men are encouraged to compete and to assertthemselves, we are expected to be quiet, loyal and obedient. Thisis not very different form what is expected of us as good wives andgood mother. The challenge we face calls for a higher level of ourpersonal development and self-determination.
The story of my grandmother andmyself mirrors the lives of millions of other women in China andperhaps in the world. Many of them still lead the life of mygrandmother. Their worth is not yet recognized. It is theresponsibility of a young person like me to work hard and strugglehard so that they will see themselves and will be seen in themirror of society.
This is my dream. This dream, Ibelieve, is not only share by our grandmothers, mothers andsisters, but also by our mothers, brothers, husbands and malecolleagues. It will not come true until everyone fully realizesthat women can contribute to society and should be guaranteed theright to do so. Women hold half the sky.
劉欣談如何學(xué)習(xí)英語(yǔ):(以下內(nèi)容節(jié)選自劉欣本人的CCTV博客)
父親是鐵路安全工程師,學(xué)過(guò)俄語(yǔ),卻從沒(méi)用過(guò);母親在一家造紙廠當(dāng)了一輩子質(zhì)檢員。大姐是好學(xué)生的典范,以勤奮對(duì)待所有挑戰(zhàn),當(dāng)然是百戰(zhàn)不殆,如今早已移居加拿大。在外企打拚的二姐也是英文極棒,還自學(xué)過(guò)日語(yǔ),法語(yǔ)和德語(yǔ),所以對(duì)哪路來(lái)的神仙都不怵,堪稱在多語(yǔ)種間自由切換、游刃有余。我是老小,兩個(gè)姐姐開(kāi)始學(xué)習(xí)英語(yǔ)的時(shí)候,我還沒(méi)太開(kāi)竅呢,只記得當(dāng)年跟著她們一起看英語(yǔ)教學(xué)節(jié)目《FollowMe》(跟我學(xué)),當(dāng)時(shí)這是唯一的電視英語(yǔ)教學(xué)節(jié)目,影響了一代人。
從初一開(kāi)始我和大家一起開(kāi)始念A(yù)BC,對(duì)英語(yǔ)的親切感意味著我根本不用把她當(dāng)成一門功課來(lái)學(xué),上課的每一分鐘都是享受,下課也不用多花時(shí)間去復(fù)習(xí),因?yàn)槔蠋熤v的東西我已經(jīng)聽(tīng)懂了,這樣的良好的開(kāi)端形成了一種巨大的動(dòng)力。中學(xué)六年,我只有一次英語(yǔ)考試成績(jī)低于90分。
我同時(shí)慶幸,我在最開(kāi)始學(xué)習(xí)的時(shí)候遇到了非常出色的老師,他們給了我一個(gè)堅(jiān)厚的基礎(chǔ)
我給自己定下的規(guī)矩是不管老師有沒(méi)有要求,我都要將每一篇課文熟讀成頌,我說(shuō)到做到,幾乎背下了中學(xué)六年學(xué)過(guò)的所有英語(yǔ)課文。當(dāng)時(shí)我并沒(méi)有意識(shí)到背課文會(huì)有多大的用處,回想起來(lái)才發(fā)現(xiàn)無(wú)意間找到了一個(gè)事半功倍的捷徑。背誦課文的過(guò)程就像梳頭發(fā),從發(fā)根開(kāi)始一個(gè)詞、一句話的往下慢慢捋,等通順了之后還需一遍一遍的反復(fù)梳理,直到梳子可以像洗發(fā)水廣告里一樣順著發(fā)絲滑落,那時(shí)全篇文章也像流水一樣從我的口中淙淙而出。在這個(gè)過(guò)程中,每一個(gè)語(yǔ)言點(diǎn)都會(huì)被關(guān)注,被理解,直到完全變成自己的東西。有時(shí)會(huì)有不順的地方,我也不會(huì)生拉硬扯,會(huì)先把它讓過(guò)去,等全文通讀了之后再回頭看,有的時(shí)候會(huì)不解自通。背誦課文的同時(shí),單詞的發(fā)音得到了練習(xí),單詞的拼寫得到了鞏固,句子的結(jié)構(gòu),動(dòng)詞變位,語(yǔ)法,時(shí)態(tài)等都得到反復(fù)的錘打,直到被完整地印在我的腦海中。在考試的時(shí)候,我很快就能從腦海中的課文例句中找到相應(yīng)的答案,而我對(duì)英語(yǔ)的感覺(jué)也在這日復(fù)一日的錘煉中越來(lái)越純正,越來(lái)越敏銳.
那是在1987年到1993年,那個(gè)時(shí)代沒(méi)有多少音像資料可選,也沒(méi)有什么外語(yǔ)廣播電視節(jié)目,只有電視上每周日播放的一部海外原版電影。我當(dāng)時(shí)總是在父母都睡了之后一個(gè)人守在電視機(jī)前,用報(bào)紙把屏幕下方的中文字幕貼上,為了不吵醒家人,我只能把音量開(kāi)得低低的,站在電視機(jī)跟前仔細(xì)聽(tīng)每一句話,聽(tīng)不太懂也愿意陪在電視機(jī)前直到困得不行。
在江南小城鎮(zhèn)江,沒(méi)有什么外國(guó)人可以接觸,當(dāng)時(shí)也沒(méi)有什么先進(jìn)的學(xué)習(xí)工具,只有選擇很少的原版卡帶,CD機(jī)并不普遍,什么復(fù)讀機(jī)MP3還沒(méi)被發(fā)明呢。我有幸得到了一盤叫“影子的房間”的歌曲磁帶,是誰(shuí)唱得已經(jīng)記不得了,在家里的錄音機(jī)上我把這盤磁帶聽(tīng)了無(wú)數(shù)遍,直到可以把所有的歌背誦出來(lái)。當(dāng)時(shí)的錄音機(jī)效果不太好,磁帶盒里也沒(méi)有附上歌詞,所以我只能聽(tīng)清大概,“背”出來(lái)的歌當(dāng)然也像是抽象派名畫一樣,只能在遠(yuǎn)處欣賞。有一天被放寒假回家的大姐聽(tīng)見(jiàn)了,她說(shuō)你在唱什么呢?我不好意思地給她看了那盤磁帶,她覺(jué)得我很不可思議,什么都沒(méi)懂,卻唱得像模像樣,那種調(diào)子和味道簡(jiǎn)直可以亂真!
要開(kāi)出好的花朵就必須從選種做起。大一的精讀課真的從音標(biāo)開(kāi)始,每一個(gè)人的發(fā)音都會(huì)被檢閱一番,好地留下來(lái),壞的撿出去,我的也不例外。記得系里特別強(qiáng)調(diào)這樣做的重要性,避免引起浪費(fèi)時(shí)間的質(zhì)疑。我受到過(guò)劉海平教授的批評(píng),當(dāng)然心里有所準(zhǔn)備,不過(guò)我也同意這樣做確實(shí)是太重要了。學(xué)生來(lái)自全國(guó)各地,而各地的教學(xué)水平有所差異,在那個(gè)高考不考口語(yǔ)和聽(tīng)力的年代,書面的成績(jī)實(shí)在不能反映出學(xué)生實(shí)際應(yīng)用英語(yǔ)的能力,所以在開(kāi)始任何深度學(xué)習(xí)之前有必要摸一下底,整齊一下隊(duì)伍,這是磨刀不誤砍柴工?,F(xiàn)在所有向我請(qǐng)教英語(yǔ)學(xué)習(xí)的人,都會(huì)得到同樣的“治療”過(guò)程,語(yǔ)音是口語(yǔ)的基礎(chǔ),沒(méi)有一個(gè)好的基礎(chǔ),其他免談。
不過(guò)這個(gè)過(guò)程卻不是幾節(jié)課的事。十幾年之后,我仍然時(shí)常發(fā)現(xiàn)自己語(yǔ)音上的問(wèn)題。
練習(xí)語(yǔ)音也是這樣,每一個(gè)音標(biāo)先得都清楚了,完全變成自己的東西之后,才能發(fā)現(xiàn)更細(xì)微的細(xì)節(jié)和差別。整個(gè)過(guò)程有一點(diǎn)像人耳對(duì)于音樂(lè)的感知過(guò)程,你必須多聽(tīng),仔細(xì)聽(tīng),才能逐漸聽(tīng)出不同的音樂(lè)之間的不同韻味。而這是一個(gè)很漫長(zhǎng)的過(guò)程,決不是幾個(gè)月能完成的任務(wù)。這也是我給每一個(gè)希望快速提高英語(yǔ)的朋友的建議:語(yǔ)法和單詞量可以速成,但是語(yǔ)音和語(yǔ)調(diào)卻急不來(lái),因?yàn)檎Z(yǔ)音的正確與否需要你的嘴部肌肉和舌頭去適應(yīng)一套全新的運(yùn)動(dòng)方式,功夫不到就是不行。
